When the Roman Legion took over an area of conquered land, they built forts and garrisoned them with troops, who, in some cases, might stay there for years. Often in such circumstances and depending on the local conditions, they might find ‘wives’ among a few of the native population. Here, one such soldier prepares to go on duty as his wife and child look on.
