Legionnaire Running with Sword & Shield, 14th Legion, Gemina Marita Victrix

The 14th Gemina Martia Victrix Legion was founded by Julius Caesar in late 58 BCE in Cisalpine Gaul.  This distinguished legion served with Caesar in Gaul 58-50 BCE, fought in the Civil Wars in Europe and North Africa 49-43 BCE, served in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East from 43-30 BCE, and fought on the German frontier through to the invasion of Britain between 25 BCE-71 CE.  In Britain in 60 CE, the 14th was General Seutonius Paulinus’ anchor legion in his famous battle “Watling Street” where 12,500 Roman legionnaires fought Celtic Queen Boudicca’s horde of 230,000.  The 14th Legion, with elements of the 20th and 9th Legions along with Auxila Cavalry, with rigid Roman discipline and a brilliant battle plan defeated Boudicca’s army and ended the revolt against Roman rule in Britain.
