Alfonzo I d’Este, Duke of Ferrara

Alfonso was the eldest son of Ercole I d’Este and ascended the dukedom of Ferrara upon Ercole’s death in 1505.  A warrior Duke, Alfonso was an active participant in the Italian Wars of the 1500s in which France, Spain, and Papal forces harried the Italian City States.

Alfonso was an expert in the making, deployment, and use of artillery.  The Ferrara factory forges made some of the finest cannons of the day.

A blunt man with little use for courtiers and frivolity, he was a rough and formidable ruler of his Ferrara City State.  His first wife, Anna Sforza, for whom he showed little affection, died at childbirth.   In 1502, Alfonso married Lucrezia Borgia, daughter of Pope Alexander VI.  Surprisingly, Lucrezia became a successful Renaissance wife, beloved by the Ferrara populace and produced several offspring for Alfonso.  Duchess Lucrezia died in 1519 and Duke Alfonso died in 1534 at age 58.
