Leonidas, King of the Spartans (ornately decorated Lambda shield)
Leonidas king of the Spartans shouts orders to his men in a desperate last stand defence against the Persians. Leonidas was the fabled king of Sparta who made a last stand defence at the gates of Thermopylae with 300 of his warriors, they held off the Persians for a week reputedly killing over 10,000 of the enemy in process. However, after being betrayed by Ephialtes, who showed the Persians a mountain pass that would allow them to outflank the Spartans, Leonidas died and passed into immortality with his men. Alongside the Spartans were 700 Thespians who also refused to surrender and chose to stay with their Spartan allies.
