Jean d'Albret, King of Navarre (1506)
John was born in 1469 to Alian I Lord of Albret and his wife Francoise of Chatillon-Limoges. While born to high French nobility he did not become King of Navarre until he married Queen Catherine of Navarre, (1470 – 1517 AD). King John’s reign became troubled when King Ferdinand of Aragon set his sights on the acquisition of Navarre. It was an unequal contest given King Ferdinand’s army and resources. It is questioned whether Ferdinand would have invaded Navarre prior to the death of Pope Alexander VI as the Pope’s favorite son Cesare was married to Charlotte Albret, sister of John III. As it turned out, Cesare, on his escape from Spanish imprisonment on the death of his father, the Pope, ended his life fighting his brother-in-law’s enemies in Navarre in 1507. King John died in 1516 due to fevers and his wife, Catherine, followed him in 1517.
