German III. Seebataillon Marine Private Kneeling Firing (without helmet)

In 1900, this German III. Seebataillon private has removed his helmet to kneels and fire his Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle.

Seebataillon (plural Seebataillone), literally "sea battalion", is a German term for certain troops of naval infantry or marines.

III. Seebataillon was a new battalion which arrived at Tsingtao on 26 January 1898 to garrison the East Asian Station of the German imperial navy.  It was and remained the only all-German unit with permanent status in an overseas protectorate.
