Hi Everyone,

 

For fun and discussion I will post weekly quiz questions about the North Africa, Italy and Normandy campaigns.  The questions posted will reflect the timelines of these respective campaigns throughout and the armies and equipment engaged in each.  The purpose of the questions is twofold: first, I hope that everyone will find the questions interesting and engaging and will respond to them to expand collectors' knowledge of World War II history ; and second, I hope that the questions will lend to providing new collectors with accurate historical information about these campaigns to heighten their enjoyment of our great hobby.

 

Here is the first quiz question concerning the North Africa campaign:  "Who were the Twelve Apostles and what was their contribution in North Africa?"

They were the US spies who made possible the invasion of N-Africa ( 12 vice consuls appointed by FD Roosevelt)

You are correct!  The Apostles were led by the intrepid Robert Murphy.  He was instrumental in setting up a meeting between General Mark Clark and senior Vichy commander Charles Emmanuel Mast in Algiers on October 22, 1942.  The meeting took place in a farmhouse owned by a Frenchman named Henri Teissier, a loyalist to De Gaulle.  The essence of the meeting between Mast and Clark was to discuss where the Allies could land without opposition from loyal Vichy French troops.

I have a question for you !!!!!!!

What was the mascot of the 1st company of the SS Panzer Abteilung 101 when it was based in Normandy in Beauvais ?

What I do know, is how much I don't know about WWII History, in the face of our more astute members.

 

But this is such a great idea and a fun way to learn.

Hi Guy,

 

Were you like this in school, too?!  Let's see what the teacher knows!!! :)   I believe the mascot was a sitting teddy bear, or was that the mascot for SS Panzer Abteilung 103?  If my answer is incorrect, where would I find information about the various mascots?  A great question!

Well, here is the answer to the question : Mascot of the 1st company of the SS-Panzer Abteilung 101

it was a CROW. In the 1st picture you see one of the crew ( the driver) and the crow ( Note the thickness of the Zimmerit coat)

the second picture shows 3 other crew members with the crow. These men are all wearing the 1944camo drill, definitely the most widespread camo clothing among the Waffen-SS tank regiments during the summer of 1944.

The second man from the left is the tank commander SS -Junker Erwin Asbach.

On D-Day he commanded Tiger 124

Guy you come up with some informative and unique stuff and Alex you came up with a unique idea. 

 

This is the type of creativity we need from our members to make our community here a cut above and something different.

Thank you for this information.  I was thinking more along the lines of an insignia and not an animal or bird (in this case).

Operation Tonga  , also called Operation "Coup de main" was part of Operation Overlord. It's about the British 6th airborne and its operations on the 6th of June. Its objective was to take a couple of bridges over the Caen Canal and the Orne river and also the destruction of the Merville Gun battery;
