The Mongols were a confederation of steppe tribes that is so well organized that it can undertake campaigns of conquest not only on the fringes of its Central Asian heartland, in eastern Europe and the Middle East, but also in China and South-East Asia. By the time the Mongols had reached the outer limits of their empire, they had become a fiercely successful military elite that controlled armies of native warriors, such as Turks and Koreans.
Much of this book is based on Chinese accounts of the Mongols and it gives us a more balanced Asian view of them. The Mongols established the Yuan dynasty in China and learned much from the Chinese. This enabled them to carry out forms of warfare way beyond their original steppe horse culture, such as seaborne invasions and siege warfare. The full range of Mongol military expertise is revealed in this book.

Title: Age of Crusades
Author: Tim Newark & Angus McBride
Pages: 48 pages, 20 color & b/w artist plates
The eastern Roman Empire based around Constantinople was known as the Byzantine Empire. It remained a potent force throughout the Middle Ages until the 15th century. Its greatest challenge came from the advent of Islam in the 7th century. The Byzantine Empire stood as a bulwark against Muslim expansion throughout the period when Western warriors fought against Islamic warriors in a series of Crusader campaigns aimed to capture various holy sites.
Outside the conflicts between Christianity and Islam, Vikings, Mongols, Turkic warriors and other barbarian raiders descended upon Christian settlements and rampaged them. Eventually the Age of the Crusades ended when the Ottoman Turks defeated the Byzantine Empire.

The warlord is the cult of the personality turned into a military force. In an age of chaos, he appears as the only man strong enough to pull together an army that can impose its will on other people. A warlord's army would be composed of clusters of troops, say armored horsemen surrounding their leader, which in turn would be supported by light cavalry which in turn are supported by archers and foot soldiers. They move and perform in mutually-supporting groups, tied together by personal loyalty and ambition, not differentiated units being guided by an invisible hand. The warlord's preferred medium is chaos. When central control fails, they are happy to assume dominance of regions and provinces. In this book, the world of the warlord is examined from prehistory through to the 20th century, demonstrating its eternal presence.

Gunpowder was first discovered and used by the Chinese, but it wasn't until the 15th century that gunpowder was of a sufficient quality to be used effectively on European battlefields. This new volume examines the use of gunpowder by military forces, and the period of coverage ranges from the mid-16th century to the late 19th century. Included in its compass are both European and colonial conflicts. As gunpowder production became more consistent, the effectiveness of weapons increased, developing from the muskets of the 16th and 17th centuries, to matchlocks and then flintlocks. These again were superseded by rifled barrels.
